Weight Gain during Pregnancy
If you were at normal weight when you began your pregnancy, you probably need to try to gain between 25 to 35 pounds over the entire nine months. Assuming you gained between one and approximately four and one half pounds during the first three months, you probably need to try to gain approximately one pound each week during the last two three months.
If you were underweight when you began your pregnancy, you probably need to try to gain a little more. The reason for this is that underweight women tend to have smaller babies. The usual recommendation is a weight gain of between 28 to 40 pounds. Assuming you gained between one and approximately four and one half pounds during the first three months, you probably need to try to gain slightly over a pound a week during each of the last two three months.
If you were overweight when you began your pregnancy, you probably need to try to only gain between 15 to 25 pounds during the entire nine months. Assuming you gained between one and approximately four and one half pounds during the first three months, you probably need to try to only gain slightly over one half pound every week during each of the last two three months. Although you don’t want to gain too much weight, you should never try to lose weight while you are pregnant because the result could be harm to your baby.
If, when you began your pregnancy, you were obese, you probably need to try to only gain between 11 to 20 pounds over the entire nine months. Assuming you gained between one and approximately four and one half pounds during the first three months, you probably need to try to gain slightly less than one half pound every week during the last two three months.
If you were at your normal weight when you began pregnancy and are expecting twins, you probably need to try to gain between 37 to 54 pounds over the entire nine months. If you started pregnancy overweight, you probably need try to gain a total of 31 to 50 pounds. If you were obese at the start of your pregnancy, you probably need to try to only gain between 25 to 42 pounds over the entire nine months. That means a weight gain of approximately one half pounds a week during the last two three months.
Putting on weight steadily and slowly is best. But don’t worry if you gain less than four pounds in the first three months, and make up for it later, or vice versa. Many women experience one or two periods in which, in a very short time, they gain several pounds period prior to leveling off. Again, don’t worry approximately it unless it becomes a pattern. The important thing is to watch your overall gain.
