It is important to gain the correct amount of weight during your pregnancy by eating a balanced, healthy diet. This is the best sign that your baby is growing at a healthy rate and is getting all the necessary nutrients he or she needs.

While it is true you need the extra calories obtained from the food you eat in order to help ensure your baby grows, you generally need only to consume an additional 100 to 300 additional calories than was necessary before you became pregnant to meet your growing needs of your baby.

You should ask your health care provider how much weight you should gain during your pregnancy. An average weight woman prior to becoming before pregnant should gain between 25 to 35 pounds while being pregnant. A woman who is underweight women need gain only between 28 to 40 pounds while being pregnant. Women who are overweight may need to gain only between 15 to 25 pounds while being pregnant. Depending on what your doctor recommends, your weight gain needs may vary.

In general, a pregnant woman should gain between 2 to 4 pounds approximately during your first three months of pregnancy and approximately 1 pound a week during the remainder of your pregnancy. However, a woman who is pregnant with twins you should be expected to gain between 35 to 45 pounds during your pregnancy. This is an average per week of between 1 and 1 and a half pounds after the normal weight gain during the first three months.

If you have gained more than the recommended weight during the beginning of your pregnancy, do not try to lose weight. It is never considered safe to lose weight during pregnancy. You should eat a wide variety of foods to be sure you are getting all the nutrients your baby and you during your pregnancy. Some tips to slow your weight gain include: Choose lower fat items when eating out at a fast food restaurant; Avoid whole milk products; Limit your intake of sugary or sweet drinks; Since salt causes your body to retain water, do not add salt to your foods when cooking; Limit high calorie snacks and sweets; Use fats and cooking oils in moderation; Use low fat cooking methods when preparing meals.
