A tubal pregnancy, which is also known as an ectopic pregnancy, occurs when an egg which has been fertilized implants itself in a fallopian tube rather than in the uterus
The early symptoms and signs of tubal pregnancy are very easy to miss. It may seem like a normal pregnancy at first: Your periods stop, symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea and breast tenderness appear, and your pregnancy test is positive. However, there are some classic symptoms to be on the lookout for including: Cramping or pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis especially if it is one sided; One or more missed periods; Vaginal bleeding or spotting, but not a normal period.
Most tubal pregnancies are usually discovered before the tenth week in the first trimester. If your doctor suspects the pregnancy is ectopic he or she will then look for other signs since only about half of women who have tubal pregnancies have the classic symptoms. The symptoms may include: An adnexal mass; an abnormal pregnancy blood test; a negative ultrasound, and; Low progesterone levels.
If rupture should occur, the symptoms and signs of tubal pregnancy will become much more serious. A ruptured tubal pregnancy is considered a medical emergency. There may be severe abdominal or pelvic which may be accompanied with shoulder pain as well. Internal bleeding can cause fainting and light headedness.
Blood loss from severe bleeding can lead to a drop in blood pressure. This can result in reduced blood flow throughout the rest of your body. Most women reach the hospital in time to be treated, however without medical care, the woman could die. In fact, about 9% of tubal pregnancies result in deaths in the U.S.
It’s sometimes possible for both doctors and patients to confuse similar medical problems with the symptoms and signs of a tubal pregnancy. These other medical problems that can appear similar include: Appendicitis; Miscarriage; Infection, and; ovarian torsion or twisting.
All of these conditions require medical treatment. If you are being treated for one or the other of similar symptoms, be sure to tell your doctor if you have concerns about a possible of tubal pregnancy.
